New Mexico defensive end Nahje Flowers has died, the school announced.

Flowers, a redshirt junior from Los Angeles, was 21 years old. The cause of death has not been revealed.

“Earlier this morning we were made aware of the tragic loss of Nahje Flowers. Our entire football team and everyone who knew Nahje are devastated by this loss,” New Mexico head coach Bob Davie said in a statement. “Nahje was a wonderful person and great teammate.”

New Mexico athletic director Eddie Nunez said in a statement that Davie and members of his staff informed the team of the news around 7:30 Tuesday morning. Nunez added that grief counselors, medical professionals and a psychologist will be available for Flowers’ teammates “for as long as needed.”

“Nahje was an incredible young man,” Nunez said. “Our entire Lobo Football family mourns his passing, and our prayers go out to his family.”

Flowers has been a contributor to the New Mexico defense for the past three seasons. He redshirted his first year on campus, played in all 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2017 and then emerged as a starter in 2018. In 11 starts in 2018, Flowers totaled 26 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Flowers appeared in five games for the Lobos this season and registered 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The Lobos, 2-7 on the season, are scheduled to host Air Force on Saturday.
