The Royal Australian Mint has revealed four new $2 coins celebrating Mr Squiggles’ 60th birthday.

The four limited edition coins, launched together with Woolworths, will be available from the supermarket for a four-week period from 13 February, or while stocks last.

The mint has also launched two $1 commemorative coins and a unique 1 cent coin.

The coins are available only by ordering the complete collection from the mint.

“The coins perfectly represent Mr Squiggle’s fun and imaginative view of the world — attributes he shared with my father,” said Rebecca Hetherington, daughter of Mr Squiggle creator, Norman Hetherington.

“I’m excited to share this opportunity with Australians who have grown up with him and remember him fondly, and also to introduce Mr Squiggle to a new generation.”

The assistant minister for treasury and finance, Zed Seselja, said Mr Squiggle has entertained millions – including him – as they grew up.

“The vibrant colours and intricate illustrations on the coins capture the fun and wonder that Mr Squiggle brought to Australian households for decades.”

The coins will be released over a staggered four-week period.

“The $2 coins will only be in our registers for a limited time, so as Blackboard says, ‘hurry up’ if you want to get your hands on your own piece of Mr Squiggle memorabilia,” Woolworths general manager of programs, Rod Evenden said.

The Royal Australian Mint and Woolworths have previously worked together for coin collections celebrating children’s book Possum Magic, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Royal Australian Mint in hot water over Possum Magic

The launch of the colourful Possum Magic coins in 2017 drew the ire of the Royal Canadian Mint, which claimed in a lawsuit filed in the Australian Federal Court that the Australian mint had ripped off its process of painting colour onto metal.

The Royal Canadian Mint demanded that the Australian mint either destroy the coins, surrender the profits or pay damages.

However, the Australian government filed a response claiming the Canadian patent shouldn’t have been granted to begin with, as the process wasn’t enough of a “novelty”.

The court ultimately dismissed both claims with the mints accepting a new licensing agreement.
