Patty Mills' teammates came to his defence in a fiery NBA showdown in San Antonio's 109-94 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday.

The Spurs thumped the Pacers, but it was a fourth-quarter run-in between Mills and Pacers big man JaKarr Sampson that caught the eye of Aussie fans.

Mills and Sampson collided as the Aussie guard attempted to box out the larger Pacer - but Sampson took issue with the bump, giving the 183cm Mills a shove before running back on defence.

Sampson then gave Mills a shove, with the Spurs veteran barely taking a step back before teammate Rudy Gay came to his defence.

Pacers guard Aaron Holiday steered Sampson away from the flare-up, with the Spurs going on to claim their 28th win of the season over the ailing Indiana.

Referees reviewed the play, handing Sampson a flagrant foul 2 and ejecting him from the game.

San Antonio sits 10th in the Western Conference with a 28-28 record, good for a spot in the upcoming play-in tournament prior to the playoffs.

Mills played 21 minutes off the bench, registering just two points, an assist and a turnover, while teammate Derrick White lead the way with 25.

Joe Ingles helps Jazz avenge Lakers NBA loss

Joe Ingles dropped five 3-pointers in his 21 points as the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Lakers 111-97, splitting their series with the defending NBA champs.

Jordan Clarkson had a game-high 22 points while Bojan Bogdanovic scored 19 as NBA-leading Jazz avenged the Lakers' 127-115 overtime victory on Saturday night.

Leading scorer Donovan Mitchell is still out for the Jazz, while LeBron James and Anthony Davis remain missing for Los Angeles.

The Jazz doubled their halftime lead to 20 points in the third quarter with 13 from Ingles, who hit three 3-pointers in that stretch.

"These guys are as good as anyone in the league with the read-drive offense," Lakers coach Frank Vogel said of the Jazz.

"They're patient. They look for great shots at the rim or great shots at the perimeter. If they don't have it, they work the possession until they get it.

"That's why their record is what it is, and obviously we weren't good enough tonight."
