Yahoo Finance Three NBA draft hopefuls reveal how they plan to incorporate their personal style into this year's virtual event
From baggy suits to more fitted ensembles, over the years athletes use the NBA draft to not only introduce themselves as incoming rookies, but to also reveal their custom-made creations. Although this year’s festivities are virtual, that isn’t stopping three potential draftees from showing off their personal style in front of millions nationwide.
Cole Anthony, Onyeka Okongwu and James Wiseman are hoping to making a fashion statement when they hear their names called Wednesday night. While he didn’t disclose what he’d be wearing, Okongwu explained he intends to dress for the occasion as though it were still a live event at Barclays Center.
“I’ll say this, my suit is going to be nice,” the former USC star told Yahoo Sports. “It’s a custom-made suit with nice colors. It’s a great fit. I’m definitely excited to show it off. Just because it’s virtual doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it.”
Wiseman, on the other hand, plans to debut a more casual outfit.
“I’m a very laidback and simple guy,” Wiseman told Yahoo Sports. “So, I just like to go with something that matches my personality. The draft being virtual won’t change how I would carry myself if it were live.”
Regardless of what fans ultimately see, it’s clear all three have drawn inspiration from athletes who are regarded as some of the best-dressed in the league. Wiseman definitely intends on setting his own fashion rules, but the 19-year-old did cite LeBron James, James Harden and Kelly Oubre Jr. as individuals he keeps an eye on style-wise.
As for the other two, one name immediately came to mind: Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
“When it comes to fashion, I consider myself a wild card. Which is why I like Shai. He’s very fly and takes risks,” Okongwu said.
“The way he puts outfits together is next level,” Anthony added.
Trends undoubtedly come and go, but there are a select few that appeal to every generation. When asked what fad they hope never goes out of style, all three had distinct answers, but collectively mentioned one timeless sneaker: Nike’s Air Jordan 1.
In collaboration with Foot Locker, fashion designer Don C gifted the hopefuls early and exclusive apparel from the brand to wear as a part of their draft night ensemble. Don C is also helping Foot Locker welcome the holiday season through their “12 Days of Greatness” campaign, which serves as an opportunity for fans to celebrate their love of basketball and the culture that surrounds the game.
