Myer rehires 2,000 stood-down workers as online sales soar
Department store giant Myer has re-hired 2,000 staff following strong Easter online sales.
Myer was forced to shut its doors in March leaving 10,000 without a job, but its online store remained running.
The Myer Easter sale saw overall online purchases up by 800 per cent and allowed for the supermarket giant to reinstate 2,000 workers to help fulfil online orders.
On Easter Sunday, sales for items such as beauty products like skincare, fragrances and makeup spiked an eye-watering 7,000 per cent, Business Insider Australia reported.
Sleepwear, lingerie, underwear and activewear were also among best-selling products, as well as home and entertainment items and menswear and childrenswear.
“Our customers clearly valued our great offers with sales in line with Black Friday figures – overall online purchases were up 800 per cent and beauty purchases up an incredible +7,000 per cent on Saturday for our one-day only beauty offers,” said Myer chief customer officer Geoff Ikin.
The free delivery threshold was also brought down to $49.
“Customer service and satisfaction is paramount to us, and our teams are working hard to ensure everyone receives their purchases as quickly as possible – we’ve also reduced our free delivery threshold to $49 and have relaxed our returns policy to give customers peace of mind with any purchase they make over this coming period,” Ikin said.
Myer has been one among several retailers that have shut down amid the lockdown restrictions implemented to stem the spread of coronavirus.
Flight Centre has cut 800 stores and and Apple has temporarily closed doors, while brands like Tigerlily, Kikki K and Michael Hill have closed indefinitely, squeezed by an already-weak retail environment.
