Microsoft confirms some Bethesda games will become Xbox exclusives: ‘This is the next step’

Now that Microsoft’s purchase of ZeniMax has finally closed, Microsoft confirmed that some Bethesda titles will be Xbox exclusives.

Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, wrote a post on the official Xbox news site about the acquisition. Microsoft announced the $7.5 billion purchase in Sept. 2020 but the deal was recently approved by both the United States and the European Union on March 8.

With this deal, Microsoft now owns several lucrative gaming properties which were previously third party such as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein and more.

Spencer also confirmed that some future Bethesda titles will be Xbox exclusives:

“This is the next step in building an industry-leading first party studios team, a commitment we have to our Xbox community,” Spencer wrote in his post. “With the addition of the Bethesda creative teams, gamers should know that Xbox consoles, PC and Game Pass will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.”

It’s a bold move on Microsoft’s part, but one that’s entirely expected. Console manufacturers have been sparring over exclusive games for decades in order to entice audiences.

For the past decade, Sony has arguably been winning that battle. Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Horizon Zero Dawn are all critically acclaimed series that are exclusive to PlayStation. Xbox, on the other hand, has been struggling with the waning popularity of Halo and Gears of War.

Microsoft’s biggest upperhand in this fight was the Xbox Game Pass. But with the ZeniMax acquisition, Microsoft now has the power to make any of ZeniMax’s many gaming properties into Xbox exclusives. So far, the company has remained coy about which Bethesda titles will be exclusive.

But anything can happen. It’s very possible that The Elder Scrolls 6 (the upcoming sequel to extremely popular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim) and Fallout 5 could be Xbox exclusives.

The new console war just got a whole lot more interesting.
