Yahoo Finance Michael Jordan donates $10 million to open two medical clinics in North Carolina
Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan can't let LeBron James be the GOAT of philanthropy. On Monday, Jordan announced a $10 million donation to open two new medical facilities in North Carolina.
The donation was made with Novant Health. In a statement, Jordan said he believes "everyone should have access to quality healthcare."
“I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown,” said Michael Jordan. “Everyone should have access to quality healthcare, no matter where they live, or whether or not they have insurance. Wilmington holds a special place in my heart and it’s truly gratifying to be able to give back to the community that supported me throughout my life.”
Jordan has plenty of ties to the area. He not only grew up in Wilmington, but also attended the University of North Carolina.
The two new clinics are set to open in 2022.
Michael Jordan donated $7 million in 2017
It's the second time Jordan has donated millions to open up medical facilities. In 2017, Jordan donated $7 million to open two clinics in Charlotte. The first of those facilities — the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic — opened in 2019. When that health center opened, Jordan vowed it was the "just the start of a battle of being able to touch as many people as we can." He followed through on that promise with Monday's $10 million donation.
On top of his healthcare donations, Jordan has made financial contributions to social and racial causes over the past couple years. In 2020, Jordan announced he was forming a NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace as one of its drivers. That same year, Jordan pledged $100 million to racial and social causes.
