McDonald's responds to video of employee 'close to tears' during shift: 'Shameful display of management'

McDonald’s is dealing with backlash over a video of what looked like a single, isolated employee “close to tears” after being left to handle an overwhelming number of orders.

According to a clip shared on Twitter, there were roughly 15 Uber Eats drivers standing outside of a McDonald’s in London on Jan. 8 waiting for their orders. Inside was a visibly stressed woman handling dozens of bagged orders by herself.

“Absolutely disgusting from @McDonaldsUK#Ealing yesterday,” the tweet said. “About 15 drivers outside waiting to pick up their #UberEats orders, and they had one woman alone running back and forth between the kitchen and handing out the orders. She was so overwhelmed she was close to tears.”

“It got to a point where she was frozen to the spot not knowing what to do,” the Twitter thread continued. “Shameful display of management from a billion dollar company – can’t afford to pay £9 an hour for at least one more person to help her…”

“That’s McDonald’s,” someone replied. “Worked there and yep sometimes one person is doing three or four things at a time overnight and people just don’t understand. There are sometimes just 3 working. We try. No longer working for them.”

London and the rest of the U.K. have entered another lockdown, which could explain the spike in Uber Eats orders. Residents will be fined if they leave their homes without a “reasonable excuse.” As of now, McDonald’s is only open for delivery and drive-thru.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s saw the video and told The Daily Mail: “The video in question shows orders waiting to be picked up by delivery drivers, and we are working with our delivery partners to ensure we eradicate delays in collection wherever possible.”
