Mac users are happier, more productive: IBM

People who use Mac devices are happier and more productive, major tech firm IBM has said following a major study.

Employees who use Apple computers were more likely to stay at IBM and be more productive, the tech company said on Tuesday at an Apple IT administrator conference.

IBM and Apple used to be bitter rivals in the personal computer wars over the 1980s and 1990s. Back then, IBM commissioned Microsoft to create its operating systems.

Chief information officer Fletcher Previn said IBM began a program called Mac@IBM in 2015, allowing staff to choose the type of computer they wanted to use at work.

Following this, IBM found that Mac users were 22 per cent more likely than Windows users to ‘exceed expectations’ in annual performance reviews. Mac users in sales were also generating deals with 16 per cent larger proceeds.

“The state of IT is a daily reflection of what IBM thinks and feels about its employees,” Previn said.

“I’ve said it before – when did it become OK to live like the Jetsons at home but the Flintstones at work?

“We aim to create a productive environment for IBMers and continuously improve their work experience, and that’s why we introduced our employee-choice program to IBM employees in 2015.”

Additionally, Mac users were 17 per cent less likely to leave the company and less likely to require tech support with only 5 per cent needing support, compared to 40 per cent of WIndows users.

In fact, IBM said it only required seven engineers to service 200,000 Macs, compared to 20 engineers for the same number of Windows devices.

According to Apple-focused technology management company, Jamf, reliability is the draw card for Mac users.

In a survey released earlier this year, Mac users chose Apple products because they generally preferred to use them, and because they considered them more reliable than other computers. Additionally, Mac users believed Mac computers provided the best support for applications and resources.

The same study found that 97 per cent of Mac users believe their productivity was increased, while 95 per cent believe their creativity was increased.
