A look inside the Prime Minister's house, The Lodge

Becoming the leader of the country is no cruisy job, but it does come with a neat perk: the keys to the principal residence of the Prime Minister of Australia.

Just a short 4 minute drive away from Parliament House in Canberra, The Lodge is one of two official residences, with the other being Kirribilli House in Sydney.

While the Prime Minister of the day aren’t his family aren’t obligated to live in The Lodge, most Prime Ministers have chosen to do so, although former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull chose to live in their $50 million Point Piper mansion instead of Kirribilli House.

A Labor win in the 2019 federal election would have meant mean the 30th prime minister, Scott Morrison, would’ve had to hand his keys over to Bill Shorten.

Here are some glimpses of The Lodge, the mansion Scott Morrison and his family will call home (in Canberra, at least) for another three years:

The 40-room mansion was built in the Australian Gregorian style, but has undergone numerous renovations since then.

Major renovations were underway during most of former Tony Abbott’s tenure in the top job, and he never got to stay in The Lodge.
