Last day for 7 million Aussies to claim $180

Everyone in Australia's most populous state is reminded Thursday is the final day to bag a free $180.

Applications for the NSW government's Family Energy Rebate are closing on 11pm AEST Thursday June 18.

The grant provides $180 to all NSW residents that have an account with an electricity provider and have received the Family Tax Benefit from the federal government for the 2018/19 financial year.

Otherwise the $180 is handed out no questions asked – but you need to apply for it.

The application form is short and simple, but the family member filling out must be the same person who received the Family Tax Benefit.

There is ambiguity online as to whether the Family Tax Benefit payment needs to be for the 2018/19 year or during the 2018/19 year.

The distinction is important because many Australians choose to receive their Family Tax Benefit in the next financial year, in order to avoid overpayment.

A NSW Planning, Industry and Environment spokesperson told Yahoo Finance that the timing of the Family Tax Benefit payment should have no bearing on the eligibility.

However, Yahoo Finance understands there could be issues with cross-matching Centrelink data with the application, meaning applicants who are rejected should try contacting the NSW Planning, Industry and Environment by email or phone.
