But before your next meat up, you might consider firing up some vegan meat alternatives on the grill that’ll make your carnivorous guests reach for plant-based seconds.
And for the best vegan hot dogs around, look no farther than Yeah Dawg, a queer-owned vegan hot dog brand based out of New York City.
Founded by Marina Benedetto in June 2013, Yeah Dawg was born out of Benedetto’s more than five years of experience as a chef and counselor at a homeless youth shelter. It was there that Benedetto took on the unique challenge of introducing kids, once used to a heavy diet of fast foods, to healthier and more nourishing foods that were “accessible and culturally familiar,” Benedetto says on Yeah Dawg’s website.
“It was here I really got into reinventing ‘classic American’ food like burgers, mashed potatoes, collard greens, mac and cheese, cornbread,” Benedetto writes. “It gave me pleasure to feed and heal people. It was here I decided that food is medicine. Everybody can be healed through food. Food is what engages us and allows us to connect with each other.”
The brand’s tag line — “Keeping fake real!” — is most evident when you skim the brand’s line-up of products, which include plant-based, vegan, soy-free and gluten-free hot dogs, sausages, condiments and toppings like “CocoNOT bacon“. (Yeah, it’s a delicious mouthful.)

The brats are made of chickpeas and oyster and shiitake mushrooms, while the standard hot dogs are made of fresh beets, sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, sunflower seeds, gluten-free flour, herbs and spices.
2. CocoNOT Bacon
Turn any hot dog into “a party dawg” with Yeah Dawg’s meatless bacon crumbles. These meatless bits are made of coconut chips and flavored with maple and smoked paprika for a smoky flavor. Toss them onto salads, tacos and pizza, or eat them straight out of the bag!
3. CHX & SHROOM bratwurst (2-pack)
These “Chx and Shroom” brats are Yeah Dawg’s latest artisanal bratwurst flavor. Made of chickpeas, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, sunflower seeds, potato, sweet potato, carrots, herbs and spices, these brats are full of protein. Serve on a bun with sauerkraut, in a stir fry or with mashed potatoes for bangers and mash.
