Need To Know: Origin Energy Limited (ASX:ORG) Insiders Have Been Buying Shares

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So before you buy or sell Origin Energy Limited (ASX:ORG), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Buying?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

Origin Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Independent Non-Executive Director Teresa Engelhard made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$150k worth of shares at a price of AU$6.30 each. That implies that an insider found the current price of AU$7.76 per share to be enticing. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. The good news for Origin Energy share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.

In the last twelve months insiders paid AU$263k for 40671 shares purchased. Origin Energy insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. Does Origin Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Our data indicates that Origin Energy insiders own about AU$9.7m worth of shares (which is 0.07% of the company). Overall, this level of ownership isn't that impressive, but it's certainly better than nothing!
