In The Know Honors: Destini Philpot

Destini Philpot
Destini Philpot

Leader, Students Demand Action Baltimore
Age: 20
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland

Destini Philpot was just 8 years old when they heard shots ring out at a Baltimore park where they were playing with their siblings. One year later, they saw a person get fatally shot for the first time. In the years since, the non-binary activist, who has lost 30 friends and loved ones to gun violence, has worked to curb it. In 2019, Philpot visited the Capitol, where they shared their experience with the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. In addition to co-founding the youth-led movement Good Kids Mad City Baltimore (which brings together activists from Baltimore to Chicago), they have also been involved in Students Demand Action Baltimore, a grassroots organization working to end gun violence.

In honor of Black History Month, In The Know is highlighting changemakers making an impact on the world through cultural advancement, community leadership, and entrepreneurial innovation. See all of the honorees here.
