We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Aristocrat Leisure Limited (ASX:ALL), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Selling?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Aristocrat Leisure

Chairman Neil Chatfield made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$144k worth of shares at a price of AU$24.02 each. That implies that an insider found the current price of AU$29.14 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. The good news for Aristocrat Leisure share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.

In the last twelve months insiders paid AU$406k for 16600 shares purchased. In the last twelve months Aristocrat Leisure insiders were buying shares, but not selling. Insider Ownership of Aristocrat Leisure

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Aristocrat Leisure insiders own about AU$27m worth of shares. That equates to 0.1% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
