Joe Willock: Arsenal accept Newcastle bid for midfielder as Gunners eye James Maddison and Martin Odegaard
Newcastle are pushing to wrap up a deal for Joe Willock after agreeing a fee of over £20million for the Arsenal midfielder.
Willock has been Newcastle’s top transfer target all summer after he impressed on loan at St James’ Park last season.
Newcastle still need to agree personal terms with Willock, who has been with Arsenal for his entire career to date after coming up through the club’s academy.
He was left out of Arsenal’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Tottenham on Sunday and manager Mikel Arteta was tight-lipped as to the reason for that absence.
“We will explain the reasons when we can,” he said. “It’s all I can say now, when I can say more I will let you know.”
Arsenal still want to do more business during the current transfer window, with a new goalkeeper and an attacking midfielder the priorities.
They are interested in Leicester’s James Maddison, while also monitoring Martin Odegaard’s situation at Real Madrid.
Odegaard spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal and impressed during his time in north London.
