James Gunn criticises "cameo porn" of recent superhero movies

DC boss James Gunn has criticised what he describes as "cameo porn" in recent superhero movies.

While speaking to fans on Threads earlier this week, Gunn highlighted the negative impact of meaningless cameos, in response to a fan's frustration about characters appearing for just a few seconds on screen "to mark a checkbox".

"I call that 'Cameo Porn' and it has been one of the worst elements of recent superhero films," he replied.

"If a character is in a film, they have to have a reason to be there story-wise."

Gunn soon clarified: "I don't mind actual cameos – if it's a glimpse or a moment, an Easter egg.

"What bothers me is when they mangle an elegant story by shoehorning characters in – they aren't there because the story calls for it, but for some other reason."

Cameos have certainly become a regular occurrence in superhero films, recently exemplified by DC's The Flash movie, which featured a whole host of stars including George Clooney as Batman and Nicolas Cage as Superman.

Gunn's comments suggest that his upcoming blockbuster, Superman: Legacy, will likely feature fewer instances of such cameo-heavy approaches.

David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will star as the new Clark Kent and Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy, which will focus on the Man of Steel as he balances his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

The two actors reportedly went through an extensive casting process for the key roles, which reportedly also saw the likes of Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney, Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor considered.

It was recently announced that Deadly Class actor María Gabriela De Faría has also joined the cast as villain Angela Spica, aka The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
