Investing in Remitly Global (NASDAQ:RELY) a year ago would have delivered you a 67% gain

Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the Remitly Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:RELY) share price is 67% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 11% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! We'll need to follow Remitly Global for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

Check out our latest analysis for Remitly Global

Remitly Global wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last year Remitly Global saw its revenue grow by 43%. We respect that sort of growth, no doubt. Buyers pushed the share price 67% in response, which isn't unreasonable. If the company can maintain the revenue growth, the share price could go higher still. But it's crucial to check profitability and cash flow before forming a view on the future.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Remitly Global shareholders have gained 67% over the last year. And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 46% in the last three months. This suggests the company is continuing to win over new investors. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Remitly Global that you should be aware of.
