Insider Buying: The Tabcorp Holdings Limited (ASX:TAH) Independent Non-Executive Director Just Bought AU$74k Worth Of Shares

Even if it's not a huge purchase, we think it was good to see that Raelene Murphy, the Independent Non-Executive Director of Tabcorp Holdings Limited (ASX:TAH) recently shelled out AU$74k to buy stock, at AU$1.06 per share. Nevertheless, it only increased their shareholding by a minuscule percentage, and it wasn't a massive purchase by absolute value, either.

Tabcorp Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The MD, CEO & Executive Director Adam Rytenskild made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$1.0m worth of shares at a price of AU$1.01 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of AU$1.09. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. Happily, the Tabcorp Holdings insiders decided to buy shares at close to current prices.

Insider Ownership Of Tabcorp Holdings

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. From our data, it seems that Tabcorp Holdings insiders own 0.4% of the company, worth about AU$9.5m. Whilst better than nothing, we're not overly impressed by these holdings.

So What Do The Tabcorp Holdings Insider Transactions Indicate?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. While the overall levels of insider ownership are below what we'd like to see, the history of transactions imply that Tabcorp Holdings insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
