IHOP (DIN) Claims Hacking After Anti-Hillary Clinton Retweet

IHOP, owned by DineEquity, Inc. (DIN), is the latest brand facing major social media uproar -- except it says its Twitter account was hacked, reports the Huffington Post.

After investigation, we have confirmed that our account was hacked this morning. We appreciate our fans bringing this to our attention.

The firm's account re-tweeted an anti-Hillary Clinton tweet last weekend, igniting a barrage of tweets as a result.

.@IHOP Was it really a hack? Or did whoever runs your account just RT Pooja? It seems odd to hack IHOP just to RT @poojaslays

The company tweeted Sunday about its investigation into the incident, and also addressed the media in a statement:

"At the core of the IHOP brand is a desire to bring people together and a commitment to creating a warm and welcoming environment for guests and fans everywhere, both in our restaurants and online," the statement reads. "After a thorough investigation, we have confirmed that the IHOP Twitter account was hacked this morning. The retweeted post in question was immediately removed, and we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the security and integrity of our social media accounts. We appreciate our fans bringing this to our attention and recognizing that this is not normal content shared by IHOP."

This incident from IHOP follows several other recent prominent social media episodes from companies like Cinnabon and Wendy's (WEN), though of different natures. Cinnabon wrote a cheeky tweet following the death of Carrie Fisher, and Wendy's sassy Twitter account tweeted (and deleted) a tweet of the Pepe the Frog meme, which has become a mascot for white supremacy.
