In 2019, Aussies sold around 70,000 old mobile phones on eBay - and they’re one of the platforms best-selling tech items.

It turns out, Aussies have over $8.08 billion worth of mobile phones lying around in their houses - and selling them is the easiest way to pocket up to $800, which is $250 more than if you traded them in at your telco.

It would come as no surprise that iPhones and Samsung Galaxies bring in the most cash, with eBay shoppers on the hunt for an iPhone X or 8 Plus, or Galaxy Note 9 or 10 the most.

According to eBay, iPhone Xs can bring in up to $799 - $249 more than what you’ll get when you trade it back to Apple - while an iPhone 8 Plus can be worth up to $602, which is $172 more than Apple will give you.

Samsung Galaxy S10s bring in around $665, and Samsung Galaxy Note 9s can bring in around $537.

If you’re not sure how much cash your phone would bring in, eBay’s got an online tool so you can plug in the details of your device to give you an idea of what your phone’s worth.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to get top dollar for your phone:

Preparation is key

Make sure your phone is backed up before you put it up for sale so you don’t lose all your data when you switch to your new model.

Research

Find out your phone’s storage capacity, camera specs and which accessories are compatible with it to ensure that your buyers are fully informed about the product and better able to make their purchase decision.

“The description is your sales pitch – try to describe your item as if there were no photos attached,” eBay stated.

Make it eye-catching

Good lighting and a solid white backdrop are key to make your phone look the best, and always use at least three great images, “but the more the better” eBay stated.

“You’ll want to take photos from every angle including close-up shots and photos of any accessories you are selling with it.”
