Yahoo Finance Georgia WR George Pickens suffers ACL injury, will undergo surgery
One of Georgia’s best players suffered a significant injury during spring practice.
Georgia announced Wednesday that junior wide receiver George Pickens injured the ACL in his right knee on Tuesday afternoon. The nature of the injury, which occurred on a “non-contact play,” was confirmed after an MRI. The injury will require surgery and Pickens has already begun his pre-op rehabilitation program, the school said.
“The good news is that the MRI showed it to be an isolated injury with no other structures involved,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “George is a hard worker. I know he will bring the same work ethic to rehab that he shows in practice every day.”
Pickens, a five-star recruit in the 2019 class, has been an impact player for Georgia since he stepped on campus. As a freshman, Pickens caught 49 passes for 727 yards and eight touchdowns. Last year, he went for 36 catches, 513 yards and six scores.
Pickens thrived late last year when USC transfer JT Daniels was bumped up to the starting quarterback role. Over UGA’s last four games, Pickens had 23 catches for 373 yards and four touchdowns.
With Daniels returning next season, that partnership was expected to continue to flourish with Pickens as the No. 1 receiver in the Georgia offense.
Georgia, which went 8-2 last fall, is scheduled to open the 2021 season against Clemson on Sept. 4 in Charlotte.
