25-year-old Sydney man Lucas Vitale was working from home long before the pandemic - and earning more than three times the average Aussie weekly income in doing so.

Vitale had been studying website building and coding since he was 16, and began working in the search engine optimisation (SEO) industry shortly after.

When he began building his own e-commerce company on the side, in a bid to keep costs low he took on building his brand’s SEO solo, boosting his skills even more.

After previously using freelance site Fiverr as a buyer, Vitale realised there was a huge demand on the platform for SEO services, and decided it could be a way to earn some extra income.

“On average, I make between $20,000 and $31,000 in any given month,” Vitale said.

And what began as his short-term side hustle quickly took over as a full-time gig.

“I’m able to generate a steady, consistent income offering my services, which is great,” he said.

“In my first month as a seller on the platform, I made $5,000, followed by $16,000 in my second month. From the third month onwards, I was making over $20,000 a month.”

Vitale said to build authority and a reputation on the platform, he researched other best-sellers in his field, and determined his key point of difference to set himself apart from the competition.

“To continue building this reputation, I focus on proving the value of my SEO work during the pitch, rather than purely talking about myself and what I can offer,” he said.

But he notes SEO in particular is an extremely in-demand service.

“It’s certainly a lucrative area to be working in as the demand for services is high, not only from new business owners, but from large businesses in a range of industries,” he said.

I’m interested in being a freelancer. What can I do?

Vitale said if you’re wanting to become a freelancer, you need to really harness the power of online.

“Think about the skills you have to offer, look at what other services are being offered, and take those skills online to platforms like Fiverr,” he said.

And focus on quality, not quantity, he said.

“Rather than the number of jobs or actions to be completed, focus on completing each to the very best of your ability and providing high quality services.

“At the end of the day, high quality work is going to help you earn that repeat business.”
