Florida's Keyontae Johnson remains in critical condition, was reportedly placed in medically induced coma

Florida basketball player Keyontae Johnson was placed in a medically induced coma in a Gainesville hospital on Monday, his grandfather told USA Today.

Since the report, Florida released a statement that Johnson “is in critical but stable condition, is following simple commands and undergoing further tests.”

The school statement didn’t address the report of a coma.

Johnson collapsed during a Saturday game at Florida State and was taken off the court on a stretcher and transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. On Sunday, Florida announced that Johnson was in critical but stable condition.

His grandfather, Larry DeJarnett, told USA Today that Johnson has since been transported to Gainesville to continue his treatment and was placed in a coma on Monday and hoped to take him out of the coma later in the day.

“He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma,” DeJarnett said. “They put him on medication to keep him sedated.”

Johnson’s diagnosis unclear

What caused Johnson’s collapse and condition is unclear. A diagnosis or prognosis has not been provided.

Johnson, 21, was voted SEC Preseason Player of the Year. A junior small forward, he averaged 14 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game en route to All-SEC honors last season and is considered an NBA prospect.

He collapsed early in Saturday’s game during a media timeout.

Florida cancels upcoming game

Later Monday, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported that Florida is canceling its upcoming game against North Florida scheduled for Wednesday. The Gators continued Saturday’s game after Johnson’s collapse. Florida State won, 83-71.
