Apple has recalled certain MacBook Pro notebook computers due to a potential fire hazard.

The recall covers 15-inch MacBook Pro devices "primarily" sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Affected serial numbers can be checked using this online tool.

"Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to replace affected batteries, free of charge," the company stated.

The risk on impacted computers is that the battery might "overheat and pose a fire safety risk".

Customers can take their computer to an Apple Store or an authorised service provider, where the battery replacement will take one to two weeks.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission urged notebook users to stop using their MacBook Pro and follow Apple's instructions.

The recall does not affect MacBook Pro models outside of those specified.
