Felony assault, gun charges land Washington WR Cody Latimer on commissioner's exempt list

The NFL has placed Washington wide receiver Cody Latimer on the commissioner’s exempt list following a May arrest for allegedly shooting a gun inside a Colorado apartment after a night of drinking and playing poker.

The league made the announcement on Monday.

Latimer’s status prohibits him from attending practice or being present during games. He may attend meetings, workouts and other non-football-related activities with the team’s permission.

Latimer facing multiple felony charges

Latimer is charged with felony assault in the second degree, felony menacing, felony illegal discharge of a firearm, misdemeanor prohibited use of weapons and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Poker game gone bad, per police

According to police reports, Latimer started an argument at a poker game in Douglas County, Colorado, just south of Denver. His friend, Roderick English, hosted the game and told police the argument prompted him to call off the game and kick the guests out of his apartment, Latimer included.

Latimer, who had allegedly been drinking along with the other players, returned to English’s home 30 minutes later with a gun, according to a police report. He told English that he had saved two bullets for him and his girlfriend, Shal, and threatened to “kill everybody,” the police report states.

Latimer then calmed down before becoming agitated again and shooting two shots near English that did not connect, according to the report. Latimer then hit English in the head with the gun when English pinned him against the wall, according to police.

Latimer was released on $25,000 bond and had a virtual court appearance in Colorado on Friday. He has another court date set for Aug. 20.

Latimer played his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos after being drafted out of Indiana in the second round in 2014.

Latimer played two seasons with the New York Giants before signing with Washington this offseason.

In six NFL seasons, Latimer has tallied 70 catches for 935 yards and six touchdowns while also working as a kick returner.
