Evo Japan coming in January 2018

Evolution Championship Series
Evolution Championship Series (Evo)

The Evolution Championship Series is expanding east into Japan, though it’s taking place a little later than some might have hoped.

Late last night, during a Tokyo Game Show 2016 presentation, Evo organizers announced that Evo Japan will be held sometime in January 2018 and the games line-up will be revealed in 2017.

According to a press release, a “pre-tournament” appears to be planned for 2017. It isn’t clear at this time when or where this tournament would take place. Evo did state that Evo Japan is a separate event from the annual fighting game tournament taking place in Las Vegas in July. Yahoo Esports has reached out to Evo for clarification.

With a January date, Evo will now host two events six months apart from each other. However, it is unlikely Evo Japan will be a part of the Capcom Pro Tour since Capcom Cup takes place in December.

Evo co-founder Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar and Mark “MarkMan” Julio will hopefully provide more information on Evo Japan later today in a scheduled interview at Tokyo Game Show.
