Kieran Tierney is fit to face England tonight, handing Scotland a much-needed boost ahead of a crucial game in their bid to qualify for the last 16 of the Euros.

The Arsenal defender sat out Monday’s defeat to the Czech Republic with a calf injury, but has responded well to treatment this week and could start at Wembley.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke said: “It is good news for Kieran, good news for us and good news for the Scottish supporters. Hopefully, we can back all that up with a good result. He has trained fully the last two days. He is available for the whole game.

“We have to try to get something out of the game, because I really feel we are going to need four points to qualify. We only focus on ourselves. We have a lot of boys playing at a really high level, week in, week out. We have two Champions League winners in the squad, which is not a bad thing to say.”

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay also hailed Tierney’s return, adding: “It’s a big deal, we need Kieran back. He’s a top player and amazing character. We rely on him a lot in terms of what he brings to the squad.”

Scotland are hoping to cause a major upset against the Three Lions, who can secure their place in the knockout stages with victory in front of 22,500 fans. Clarke has made no attempt to hide the importance of avoiding defeat in terms of keeping their Euros hopes alive after their 2-0 defeat to the Czechs.

“The objective when we started was to get enough points to get to the knockout stage for the first time in our history, and we still have that in front of us,” he said. “We look to get something out of the game against England and we have to get something from the game against Croatia as well.

“The players have to believe in themselves, that’s the first criteria. They’re playing at a really good level — a lot of them are team-mates with players in the England squad — so they’re used to seeing them on the pitch, used to seeing each other playing big games.

“I wouldn’t think they lack the self-belief to go there and get a result. You just do a bit of work on the training ground and hope, when the chances come, they are clean. The Czech Republic blocked about 10 of our 19 shots the other day.”

McTominay added: “You go in to win the game, but most definitely don’t lose, that’s first and foremost.

“We have to get a result, it’s as simple as that. That’s the sole focus of the group. We had 24 hours after the game to digest what happened and the mistakes that were made in front of goal and defending.

“I’m sure you’ll see a big reaction, players hungry to win the game and obviously do it for everyone in Scotland.”
