Is Disney going to open a MARVEL theme park?

Just months after opening its Star Wars land, Disney is reportedly planning to open a Marvel themed world.

Copies of construction permits submitted by Walt Disney Co.’s Anaheim resort obtained by The LA Times suggest the story-telling machine wants to open a Marvel comics expansion attached to Disneyland.

This world would replace A Bug’s Life Land and would include a Spider-Man themed ride, microbrewery and will expand on Disneyland’s current Guardians of the Galaxy ride Breakout which opened in 2017.

Temporary walls around the construction area currently read “Stark Industries”, which - as any Marvel fan would tell you - is the fictitious business owned by superhero Tony Stark.

The extension is estimated to cost US$14 million, with Disney expected to officially announce the extension at its D23 conference to be held in Los Angeles in August.

Disneyland Paris revealed concept artwork for its Marvel land earlier this month, describing it as an area that will put guests in the “heart of the action and their favourite superheroes’ epic adventures, from Doctor Strange’s mystical arts to Spiderman vertiginous exploits”.

It comes as Marvel enters phase two - a cinematic universe devoid of original heavy hitter (SPOILER) Tony Stark, and a very likely departure of Captain America and a potentially reduced presence of Thor after he appeared to pass the mantel over at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame.

The Paris theme park appears to highlight that, with four newer heroes, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, the Wasp and Spiderman in pride of place.
