Dermatologist debunks misunderstandings around TikTok's DIY lip plumper: 'Don't do it girl, it's not worth it'

The latest lip plumping hack to grace TikTok involves directly applying cinnamon oil onto your lips.

Lip plumping has been a beauty trend for years, arguably thanks to Kylie Jenner’s 2015 lip injections. Not everyone is willing to or able to afford to go to a doctor to get injections and, as a result, there’s been a slew of DIY hacks to hit the internet in the past — from using wasabi to sucking on a shot glass.

Now, cinnamon oil seems to be the new move for beauty lovers.

Cinnamon is found in some popular lip-enhancing glosses, but TikTokers are directly applying the oil to their lips instead of shelling out for new makeup.

Beauty guru Brittany Miller was one of the many TikTokers to try the hack. In her clip, she diluted the cinnamon oil before applying it onto her lips with some lip gloss.

Commenters seemed divided over whether it was worth the risk.

“I’m about to, like, order this now,” one user wrote, tagging a friend.

“Don’t do it, girl, it’s not worth it,” another countered. “It will dry your lips out and irritate your skin.”

In The Know spoke to Edyta Jarosz, the master aesthetician at Shafer Clinic Fifth Avenue, to see if the trend was actually OK to try.

“Cinnamon oil has a plumping effect on the lips and can make them more juicy. It will naturally increase your lip size, but not permanently,” Jarosz said. “As long as you aren’t allergic to cinnamon oil, this should be safe to do and a slight tingly feeling is normal.”

Jarosz also adds that those with sensitive skin or possible allergies should always do a small patch test before actually applying it. But overall, cinnamon oil is a natural way to temporarily plump your lips.
