Australian department store David Jones will cut 120 jobs across its head office and store network.

David Jones is attempting to streamline operations as it faces difficult trading conditions, the company confirmed to Yahoo Finance.

Thirty jobs will go from its head office in Melbourne with another 90 to be axed across its regional and suburban stores. However, according to The Australian, David Jones flagship stores will be left untouched.

The department store is attempting to prioritise digital and online growth opportunities over its bricks and mortar business, with the majority of head office jobs affected involved in store rollouts, management and refurbishment.

In the company’s Wollongong store, 28 staff were told they would lose their jobs across Wednesday and Thursday, with those jobs included in the overall 120.

“These changes have been made to achieve greater alignment between our team and the strategic priorities and initiatives of the business. They reflect our strong focus on cost at a challenging time for retail, and will enable continued investment and innovation in-store and online as we further enhance our multi-channel customer experience,” David Jones said in a statement.

“These changes will not impact our customer experience in any way and are primarily focused on a limited number of stores, where we have plans to optimise and change our offering including through right-sizing store footprints and more focussed store curation.

“We remain committed to further customer service initiatives across all of our channels, and we continue to invest significantly in training and systems to enhance the customer experience wherever our customers choose to shop.”
