A handful of Commonwealth Bank customers are in for a surprise when they check their bank statement next.

The major bank confirmed with Yahoo Finance that a small number of customers were affected by a glitch with the CommBank app and Netbank that prompted multiple payments on Thursday morning.

Some users who encountered an error screen when making a transaction were told that the payment did not go through – when it had – and were directed to make another transaction, iT News reported.

“Some customers may have tried making multiple payments and our commitment is that no customer will be left out of pocket because of this,” CBA said in a statement on Thursday at 10am.

The issue was fixed by 5:30pm, but some of the payments have already been processed to other banks. CBA is still in the process of paying some customers back.

Speaking to Yahoo Finance, a CBA spokesperson said: “We are aware some customers may have encountered issues in the CommBank app and NetBank when making payments very early Thursday morning.

“We fixed the issue promptly however we're aware some customers may have tried making multiple payments and some of these have already been processed to other banks,” said CBA.

“We're sorry for any inconvenience caused to our customers and we are contacting these customers directly.”

Customers that have been affected by this glitch can contact CBA on 13 2221 (option 4, option3, option 0) for bank staff to assist in arranging a reversal.
