Billy Joe Saunders came up short in his quest for a shock victory over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in Saturday’s huge super-middleweight title unification clash.
Britain’s two-weight world champion played his part in a competitive and absorbing affair in front of a bumper crowd numbering more than 73,000 people at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, but saw his attempts to dethrone the Mexican pound-for-pound king ended by a brutal eighth-round onslaught.
As part of that decisive attack, Canelo landed a powerful uppercut that appeared to inflict serious damage to Saunders’ eye socket, leaving him unable to see as he failed to rise from his stool for the start of the ninth round and was pulled out of the fight by his corner.
Saunders was taken to hospital quickly after the fight for further assessment on a suspected orbital bone fracture.
He has lost his WBO title and undefeated record, with Canelo now just one belt away from becoming the first undisputed champion in the history of the super-middleweight division.
