No, Celtics coach Brad Stevens doesn't want the Indiana job: 'I'm a 44-year-old Masshole'

Brad Stevens, no matter how hard Indiana fans and others in the college basketball world may try to speak it into existence, has no interest in taking over in Bloomington.

Stevens, who grew up in Indiana, insisted on Friday that he not only doesn’t want to leave the Celtics, but that he’s fully embraced Boston.

“I love coming to work every day. I love this area,” Stevens said. “People have been great to us. My family is so happy. And, at the same time, home is home. And that’s why I wanted to make sure everybody understood that means a lot. But no. Just like I said on Tuesday, I’m not [interested in Indiana] … And people can hopefully appreciate that it still means a lot to me and I hope they hire whoever they hire and they are there for 20 years and kids feel like I did.

“I’m not a kid anymore. I’m a 44-year-old Masshole. I swerve around others when I’m driving. I eat Dunkin Donuts and I root for the Patriots. I’m, unfortunately, skewed in a lot of ways, I guess.”

Indiana fired Archie Miller after 4 seasons

Stevens has been with the Celtics since 2013, and compiled a 338-266 overall record there while leading them to the Eastern Conference Finals three times. He made the jump to the NBA after a great stint at Butler, where he led the Bulldogs to four Horizon League regular season titles and back-to-back Final Four runs.

As a Zionsville (Indiana) native, Stevens is undoubtedly the perfect candidate to replace Archie Miller — who was fired after four seasons this week – at Indiana.

The Celtics, at 20-20, are just barely holding on to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The rough stretch only added to the idea that Stevens may want to jump ship and return to the college ranks.

That, it seems, isn’t in the cards.

So the Hoosiers will instead have to turn elsewhere to replace Miller, who went just 67-58 at Indiana and failed to reach the tournament once. Which route they take, though, is still anybody’s guess.
