When Texan waitress Emily Bauer received a US$2,000 (AU$2,683) tip from a customer, she was elated – but her high was quickly shattered, after her boss revealed he couldn’t pay it out.

According to Bauer, her manager told her the limit of a tip is US$500, and he couldn’t pay it out. The waitress told local news outlet, KENS5, she’d “never heard” of that rule.

“I don’t think it’s our responsibility as a server to say, ‘oh, you can’t tip me that much, I’m sorry. Oh no, there’s a limit, I’m sorry.’ If that’s the case, there should be signs posted on the restaurants or the receipt to say there’s a limit of $500,” Bauer said.

“Everybody I’ve talked to has been like, ‘I’ve never heard of that before.’ If it’s left to you and signed by that person, then you should be able to get it.”

The restaurant, Red Hook Seafood and Bar, revealed they were contacted by the man who left the tip, who was disappointed she couldn’t have the money.

“The Gentleman called after he left that evening asking if Emily would be able to receive her tip he was told by management that the tip would NOT process and if he could come by & pay her in cash or a check written out to her he said OK then hung up quickly,” the eatery stated on its Facebook page.

However, they said the man had not yet been to the restaurant to pay her.

Days after the incident, restaurant owner John Cheng revealed the restaurant had in fact tried to process the tip, but it had been blocked by the customer’s bank, and they had not heard from the customer since.

But rather than let it fall by the wayside, Cheng decided to take matters into his own hands, and write Bauer a cheque for the entire tip, plus the customer’s bill, totalling US$2,069.01.

“It’s Christmas time, and everybody is struggling,” Cheng told KENS5. “I'm ready to give it to her as a Christmas gift.”

“The fact that the owner of my job is willing to give it to me, even though it wasn’t his mess-up, I can’t thank him enough for that,” Bauer said.
