Bitcoin (BTC) has become a mainstay in the headlines lately, with Tesla recently announcing the world’s largest corporate purchase of the cryptocurrency, and DogeCoin becoming the most tweeted-about crypto in a single day, thanks to Elon Musk.

But while some people are still familiarising themselves with the digital currency, dubbed “digital gold”, others are an old hat at investing in it.

New research from Traders of Crypto has revealed that 10 of the world’s biggest holders of crypto have net worths of over US$1 billion.

At the top of the list is Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin, who is rumoured to own around 1 million Bitcoins – although no one knows who he really is.

Satoshi Nakamoto is actually a pseudonym for a person or persons who invented Bitcoin and authored the first Bitcoin white paper back in 2008. The creation of Bitcoin was also the creation of the first blockchain database.

But no one has been able to confirm Nakamoti’s real identity, with his formal involvement with Bitcoin ending in 2010.

With the price of one Bitcoin currently at US$47,296.50, that puts his net worth at around an eye-watering US$47.3 billion, or around $61 billion.

The world’s second-richest owner of Bitcoin is Chinese, by the name of Micree Zhan.

Zhan co-founded Chinese cryptocurrency mining company Bitmain in 2013, and is the company’s largest shareholder. Forbes puts Zhan’s net worth at US$3.2 billion.

He’s not the only Chinese billionaire on the list; among the world’s 10 richest cryptocurrency owners, five are from China, and four are from America.

Third on the list is Chris Larsen, a Silicon Valley executive known for co-founding multiple tech start-ups. But these days, he’s probably better-known as the co-founder and executive chairman of Ripple, one of the most popular cryptocurrencies right now.

Investopedia states that Larsen owns 5.19 billion units of Ripple, and his net worth is estimated to be US$2.9 billion.
