Big W staff in limbo: Locations of store closures still unconfirmed

Staff in limbo as Big W is yet to confirm which stores will shut.
Staff in limbo as Big W is yet to confirm which stores will shut.

In March this year Big W confirmed it would shut 30 stores over the next three years, with two distribution stores in South Australia and Queensland also expected to close their doors.

But, almost three months after the announcement, there’s still no word from Big W on exactly which stores would be closing, leaving staff in six central west stores in limbo.

According to Western Advocate, a spokesperson for Big W’s parent company, Woolworths, admitted that not identifying the locations of the soon-to-be closed stores had created uncertainty, but there’s been no effort made to reduce that uncertainty since.

The spokesperson said they had made no specific store closure announcements to date as negotiations with landlords were ongoing.

“In the interim, all Big W stores will continue to trade as normal,” the spokesperson said.

"These are difficult decisions to make and we regret the impact this will have on affected team members."

The closures follow Big W’s announcement that it expected losses of between $80 and $100 million this financial year.

Big W is also set to shut 41 Optical stores by the end of this month.
