Bethesda announces Indiana Jones video game — and it could be an Xbox exclusive

Bethesda announced that it’s working on an Indiana Jones game, making it the first publisher to collaborate with Disney’s new Lucasfilm Games brand.

The reveal came via a teaser video on Bethesda’s official Twitter account. It shows an assortment of items closely associated with the swashbuckling archaeologist, including his iconic fedora and bullwhip.

A post on the official Star Wars blog confirmed that the game will have a completely original story “set at the height” of Indy’s adventuring days.

Lucasfilm Games confirmed that the upcoming title will be made by MachineGames and executive produced by Todd Howard, best known as the face of The Elder Scrolls series and the Fallout series since Fallout 3.

While a new Indiana Jones game is a pleasant surprise, it’s also a move that makes a lot of sense. MachineGames is the developer behind the critically acclaimed Wolfenstein reboots. Wolfenstein features a dark, alternate future where Nazis rule the world using super-advanced technology stolen from an ancient order of Jewish mystics.

So yeah, Indiana Jones is familiar territory for MachineGames. With the fifth Indiana Jones movie due out in 2022, this is also a great time to reintroduce the character to a new generation of fans.

And it’s possible that Bethesda’s Indy could be an Xbox exclusive. Back in Sept. 2020, Microsoft bought Bethesda to the tune of $7.5 billion. The acquisition was seen as a power move to challenge Sony’s extremely strong stable of exclusives games, including Spider-Man, The Last of Us, God of War and Uncharted, a series that was directly inspired by Indiana Jones.

The upcoming Indiana Jones game just might be one of the aces that Microsoft has been looking for. Of course, both Lucasfilm Games and Bethesda haven’t confirmed what platforms the game will launch on.

But with Microsoft’s recent drive to secure stronger exclusives, don’t be surprised if Indy decides to throw in with Xbox.
