A Victorian man aged in his 30s has died from coronavirus.
The man, who is believed to be the youngest Australian to die from the virus, was being treated at Maroondah Hospital in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews declined to provide any further details such as the possibility of the man having underlying health conditions, saying that information and his identity will be up to his family to reveal if they want to.
“I would just say that it shouldn't have to get to a tragedy for people to acknowledge that this is a virus that affects everyone," Mr Andrews said.
"But if – if that's what it takes, we're terribly saddened by this, but hopefully no one misses that point - that this is something that's not just of those who are frail and aged."
The state’s death toll rose by 15 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 162 people, as Victoria announced 725 new coronavirus cases. It is the highest death toll and highest number of new cases reported by any Australian state since the pandemic began.
Three men and one female in their 70s, three males and three females in their 80s, and three males and one female in their 90s also died within the 24-hour period.
Of the 15 deaths, 12 are linked to outbreaks at aged care facilities.
The state's previous new case record was 723 on July 30, though daily case numbers have consistently been in triple-digits for a month.
The second wave of the virus prompted Mr Andrews to declare a state of disaster and impose stage four restrictions on Melbourne, including a curfew.
From Thursday, all essential workers in the city will be required to show a permit if pulled over by police to prove they are allowed to leave their homes.
Some workers - like nurses and police officers - can use their official identification, while others have to apply for the permit online, which must be signed by themselves and their employer.
Businesses caught issuing permits to workers who do not meet the requirements face fines of up to $99,123, while individuals can be fined up to $19,826.
