Australia Post will open the doors to its new Redbank facility in October this year - and it will be the largest parcel facility and delivery centre in the southern hemisphere.

The facility will process up to a whopping 700,000 parcels per day at its pear - or around 35,000 parcels an hour - to meet the growing demands of online shoppers.

“We know Australia’s love affair with online shopping isn’t slowing down,” Australia Post’s group chief operating officer, Bob Black said.

Last year, Aussies spent $27.5 billion nationally, which is an increase of 24 per cent on the year before that.

And the biggest culprit?

Queensland.

“Making up 19 per cent of all online shopping across the nation, Queensland also had three of the top 10 postcodes – Toowoomba, Mackay and Bundaberg – each with strong growth all above 20 per cent,” Black said.

The new facility is good news for local employment too, with Black announcing 500 employees are set to be stationed at the new facility.

Black also said the company would be investing in new tech to deal with increasing volumes, and create better workplaces.

“As a business we know how important it is to continue to invest in our workforce, especially where there are opportunities for us to retrain our people to transition from the declining letters business to our growing parcels business.”

The Redbank facility is part of Aus Post’s ongoing $900 million investment in parcel procession.
