ASX to rise as Judge blasts 'not contrite' cafe

ASX: The ASX is expected to lift on Friday after Wall Street posted gains overnight. The ASX200 finished Thursday lower, down 0.29 per cent at 6,173.8 points.

Wall Street: Wall Street finished the Thursday session higher as investors were buoyed by hopes of more fiscal stimulus.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 149.85 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 28,360.67, the S&P 500 gained 16.74 points, or 0.49 per cent, to 3,452.3 and the Nasdaq Composite added 13.58 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 11,498.27.

Underpayments: A Melbourne cafe has copped a $232,545 penalty after underpaying some 73 staff members more than $180,000.

The owners of Barry Cafe in Northcote were described as having deliberately underpaid workers as much as $12,315, with Judge Riley saying they didn’t believe the owners were sorry.

“I do not accept that the respondents are genuinely contrite. Rather, I consider that they are very sorry that they have been caught, and are facing a substantial penalty,” Judge Riley said.

Qantas: The full damage to the Flying Kangaroo will be outlined by Qantas at its annual general meeting today. Qantas has cut 8,000 jobs as international and domestic travel plunged, with international travel yet to resume.
