Play Airlines, the low-cost Icelandic airline, recently announced its plans to establish a terminal at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., as reported by the travel website The Points Guy.

Beginning in April 2023, Play Airlines flights from D.C. will connect with the carrier’s base at the Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik, Iceland. After which, passengers can transfer from Reykjavik to other major cities in Europe.

According to The Points Guy, Play Airlines commenced operations in 2021 with flights to Stansted Airport in London. Next, they added more routes to Europe and new connections this past summer to Boston’s Logan International Airport and the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The Points Guy mentions that to subsidize their low-cost flight services, Play Airlines charges passengers for secondary amenities such as checked baggage, meals and assigned seating. Unbundled airfare prices for the new D.C. route start at just $99 each way.

More affordable flights to Europe

Play Airlines uses Airbus A320neo and A321neo planes, providing a comfortable flying experience with a generous amount of leg room for a low-cost carrier, says a review from The Points Guy. While The Points Guy mentions that there’s no Wi-Fi or in-flight entertainment, and passengers have to pay for meals, Play Airlines certainly makes traveling overseas more affordable.

According to The Points Guy, Play Airlines will be the first low-cost airline for flights between D.C. and Europe. Tickets for direct flights between D.C. and Europe are known to be costly. However, the addition of Play gives other airlines at Dulles the incentive to lower ticket prices for direct flights.

Come 2023, a trip to Europe might be more affordable than ever, so now’s a good time to start planning your next vacation!
