Airbnb launches search tool for business travellers as more Australians turn to the accommodation app for work trips

  • Airbnb has launched a new 'work trip' feature that let business travellers search for work-friendly properties much easier.

  • It comes as the company's internal data found more Australians and New Zealanders are choosing to stay at home-style accommodation over traditional corporate options on work trips.

  • Airbnb also found the number of millennials using Airbnb for Work across ANZ increased by 59% in 2019 compared to 2018.

As people around the world are increasingly using Airbnb for business, the property company has decided to beef up its Airbnb for Work option with the addition of a new search tool.

Called ‘Work Trip’ the service makes it easier for business travellers to search for properties with all the work-related amenities they need such as free wifi, flexible cancellation, fully-equipped kitchens for home-cooked meals and study areas.

It comes as research from Airbnb’s internal data found more Australians and New Zealanders of all ages are choosing to stay at home-style accommodation over the usual corporate hotels when they travel for work.

The company also found the number of millennials using Airbnb for Work across Australia and New Zealand increased by 59% in 2019 compared to 2018. In addition, the company's data found the number of companies using Airbnb for Work for business travel has risen from 400,000 to 500,000 globally.

Airbnb for Work APAC regional head, Alvan Aiau Yong, said in a statement that the ‘work trip’ feature lets guests look for work-friendly places to stay that have received high ratings from other business travellers, including entire homes, Airbnb Plus and boutique hotels.

“Previously, guests were asked if trips were for business travel at checkout, this was primarily to help with expensing by charging to companies directly,” he said. “However we saw the importance to place the search at the beginning of the process with guests now being able to customise their search results for business travel.”

Yong added that companies can save an average of 49% a night when their employees book an Airbnb over traditional hotels.

“We believe this economic benefit is one of the reasons we’re seeing such strong uptake across the ANZ region,” he said.

The new Airbnb for Work feature comes after accommodation website its new luxury arm, Airbnb Luxe, in June. Airbnb Luxe offers guests a stay at more than 2,000 swanky properties around the world, that have to pass strict evaluation processes over their design and function.

It also launched a raft of "bucket list-worthy" experiences under the Airbnb Adventures brand in June.
