Yahoo Finance AEW signed 8-year-old Brodie Lee Jr. to a contract before his father's death
The death of wrestling star Brodie Lee (also known as Luke Harper, real name Jon Huber) shocked the wrestling community when it was announced on Saturday. Lee died of a non-COVID-19-related lung issue, and very few people knew he was sick.
AEW is airing a tribute to Lee on Wednesday as its first episode since his death, but they’ve gone a step further to honor his memory and his legacy: they’ve signed his 8-year-old son, Brodie Lee Jr., to a legitimate contract.
On the podcast “What Happened When” with Tony Schiavone, Schiavone described how Brodie Jr. was brought in to “fight” AEW World Champion Kenny Omega a few weeks ago, jumping on his back and forcing Omega to tap out. The segment was taped without an audience, and after it was over, they signed Brodie Jr. to a real contract.
“Knowing that Brodie was very sick and knowing it was holiday time, and I guess knowing that for him to kick out, it was going to be, I don’t want to say a miracle, but it was going to be very difficult to kick out. They had brought little Brodie to TV and wrestling is his life. He is 8 years old. He really is a great kid. They made him a member of The Dark Order. They put a mask on him. He came out with a kendo stick. He beat up a lot of people. This of course was at a TV taping with nobody in the audience. They signed him to a contract. They legitimately signed him to a contract and when he gets of age, he will be with AEW.”
Schiavone also discussed how much Brodie Jr. loves wrestling. He would come to his dad’s tapings and follow the wrestlers around, staying excited about every match until the wee hours of the morning.
Brodie Jr. is still just a kid, and he may not want to be a wrestler when he grows up. But if he does decide to follow in his father’s footsteps, AEW is committed to making him a part of their future. It’s a way to pay tribute to Lee and honor his legacy not just now, but for years to come.
