Adelaide named Australia's most liveable city

A new survey has ranked Adelaide as Australia's most liveable city for a third year running.

A national poll conducted by the Property Council of Australia ranked the top Australian cities based on housing affordability, public transport, traffic congestion and environmental sustainability.

Residents were asked about 17 features, ranging from schools, transport and property, to natural environments and coping with growth.

Taking into account the views of thousands of city residents, the PCA found Adelaide came out on top, closely followed by Canberra.

Sydney ranked second-last, just ahead of Darwin.

The council said Hobart and Newcastle jumped dramatically in the rankings and Perth had the steepest fall.

Hobart rose to third position after being equal sixth in 2011 with its climate partly credited for its rise.

Victorian city Geelong was included for the first time, ranking fifth. However, since this was Geelong’s debut on the survey, there is no way to determine whether the city has improved its liveability in recent years.

Melbourne slipped, going from equal third most liveable to seventh, two rungs below Geelong.
