4 Australian industries going on a hiring spree
Wages aren’t growing, job ads are falling, and businesses are being more cautious about new hires compared to last year.
That’s according to jobs website adzuna.com.au CEO Raife Watson.
“In 2018, businesses were more open to trialling larger test budgets across a range of new marketing and advertising channels, including job search boards,” he said.
“What we are seeing now is businesses analysing their advertising spend with more rigour, as a result of their budgets being significantly smaller. In the current economic climate businesses have their return-on-investment under the microscope.”

In such an environment, where are all the job openings?
According to Watson, there are four particular industries that are spending money on new hires:
1. Government
Average salary for government jobs: $106,973
The federal government is hiring people for the National Disability Insurance Scheme – which means physiotherapists as well as project managers are in luck.
According to roles advertised on Adzuna, the government is hiring for speech therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, project officers and project coordinators.
More money is also being allocated to Defence’s advertising budget.
2. Healthcare
Average advertised salary for jobs in healthcare: $112,497
The Australian population continues to age, meaning the healthcare sector needs nurses, doctors and allied health professionals like speech pathologists and dentists.
These are the most in-demand jobs in healthcare, according to Adzuna:
Aged-Care Nurses ((average salary is $44,880 according to PayScale)
Personal Care Assistants (average salary is $45,005 according to PayScale)
Exercise Physiologists
3. IT
Average advertised IT job salary: $122,230
Every business, big or small, needs an IT professional, so those working in this sector will continue to enjoy high demand. Bigger organisations are looking for specialist professionals such as systems engineers, according to the jobs website.
The most in-demand IT jobs also include web developers and business analysts.
4. Gig economy
Uber and Menulog continue to hire for new employees thanks to the “unprecedented growth” in the gig economy as well as high turnover rate, according to Adzuna.
