11 Aussie universities are among the top 200 in the world - and UNSW had the biggest jump in rank since 2018

• The Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking 2020 list has been released, with 11 Australian universities making it into the top 200.

• It is a rise from nine Aussie universities that cracked the top 200 list in 2018.

• The University of New South Wales had the biggest improvement among the the lot, jumping 25 spots since 2018.

Australian universities are stepping up.

A record 11 Australian universities have ranked among the top 200 universities in the world, up from nine universities in 2018, according to the latest world university ranking.

The Higher Education Education (THE) World University Ranking 2020 list included nearly 1,400 universities in 92 countries, measuring a uni's performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

A total of 35 Australian universities made it onto the overall list. When it came down to the top 200, Australia had more universities ranked outside of the US, UK or Germany.

Some of the Aussie universities making it onto the list were the University of Melbourne - equal 32nd with LMU Munich in Germany, Australian National University (50), University of Sydney (60), University of Queensland (66), University of New South Wales (71), Monash University (75) and the University of Canberra (193).

The University of New South Wales was the most improved, jumping 25 places from the year before.

UNSW President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Jacobs attributed the jump to the university's improved performance in research and teaching.

"It reflects our progress across the spectrum of research, education, innovation, equity, thought leadership and global impact," he said in a statement.

THE's editorial director Phil Baty said UNSW's rise in rank was a "fantastic achievement".

“When THE hosted its three-day Asia Pacific Research Excellence Summit with UNSW in early 2019, the university’s qualities were plain for all to see: strong, relevant research expertise across multiple areas, including many fields of significance to sustainability, a commitment to innovation in teaching, and a focus on international partnerships, not least in the booming knowledge economies of China and East Asia,” he said in a statement.

Oxford University topped the list for the fourth year in a row. It was followed by the California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge.
