$10,000 per month: How Jenny turned her side hustle into a full-time gig

Aussies can earn $1,000 to $4,200 per job for freelance Shopify work.

When the pandemic hit, Jenny Inhof quit her full-time job in fashion sales and marketing to become her own boss.

“I decided to quit my job on a whim and had no idea what I was going to do and where I was headed,” Jenny told Yahoo Finance.

“All I knew is that I really wanted to work for myself and I had to think quickly on my feet and do something that had previously made me money before.”

Before starting her career in fashion, Jenny owned an e-commerce store selling cosmetics. It was here she learnt the ins and outs of e-commerce platform Shopify.

“While I was at my full-time job, I was dabbling in website design and development and doing a couple of side projects here and there for people. So that got me into the world of freelancing and website design and development,” she said.

After quitting her job, Jenny started freelancing on platforms like Fiverr, offering Shopify audit services, including suggestions on how businesses could improve their website’s conversions, design, functionality and user experience. Within a year, Jenny said she was able to make back her previous full-time income.

Jenny now runs her own Shopify design and development business, Just Create It Digital, which employs four other staff. Fiverr is just one of the business’s income streams, alongside gaining clients via its own website and social media.

“At the moment, we consistently make a minimum of $10,000 every month on Fiverr alone. In terms of our revenue to date, on Fiverr it is well over $300,000 since joining,” she said.

Jenny said the best thing freelancers could do was to get themselves out there on different platforms, create a solid portfolio showcasing their work, and to network.

“When I started initially, I was focused on getting myself an amazing portfolio that showcased beautiful work examples, that then built trust with my clients and helped me grow from a freelancer to an agency and employ staff because I have so much demand that I couldn’t keep up with it myself.”

In-demand skill

Jenny isn’t the only Aussie cashing in on Shopify services. According to Fivverr, demand for Shopify developer services skyrocketed 100 per cent on the freelancer platform last year.

It is now one of the highest-earning services on the platform, Fiverr says, with an earning range of between $1,000 and $4,200 per job.

Interestingly, female-identifying freelancers were found to earn 15 per cent more, on average, than men.

Shopify dropshipping store experts are also in high demand on the platform, experiencing 512 per cent growth over the six months to April 2023. Jobs on the platform have an average earning range of between $400 and $1,550 each.
