Good morning.
1. The EU has launched an investigation into Amazon over potential antitrust violations. It comes after it slapped Google and Apple with giant fines. Meanwhile, Amazon reportedly wants to be one of the largest convenience chains in America with 3,000 cashierless stores.
2. The Australian dollar rose further, after posting steady gains in Asian trade yesterday following a pledge from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang that China will keep its currency stable. As of 8:30am AEST, the Aussie was up 0.6% to 0.7260
3. A boy in NSW has been arrested after admitting to police he put needles in strawberries. It comes as more than 100 Australians say they have found needles hidden in strawberries and other fruit. Three states are now offering the $100,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
4. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has rejected calls to sack Peter Dutton over the au pair saga, and says he has full confidence in the federal minister. It comes after a Senate inquiry launched by the Opposition found Dutton misled Parliament by denying he had personal connections to the families wanting to host two women he released from immigration detention.
5. Facebook is facing discrimination lawsuits amid reports it allowed Uber to run job ads targeted exclusively at men. US civil rights organisation the ACLU filed a complaint against the tech giant claiming that 10 employers had targeted job ads only to men. Facebook said it is reviewing the complaint.
6. Don't be duped. Possibly hundreds of ANZ and Commonwealth Bank customers downloaded fake banking apps from the Google Play store in June. The apps phish for credit card details and banking log-in credentials from unsuspecting bank customers. And because the banks were simply impersonated, and not hacked, neither was forced to tell customers about the breach.
7. A Google programmer just published a book of cartoons that shows what it's really like to work at the search giant, and it's hilarious. The 148-page book, "Goomics", shows how employees make good use of the famous perks Google offers, such as free food.
8. A $US736 billion investor that survived the stock market crash of a lifetime has three simple pieces of advice for anyone who's just starting out: Don’t sell at the point of maximum pain, stick to the basics, and the nature of a globalised economy makes neatly apportioning blame very hard. Here's what he means by that.
9. The AI behind Gmail's new Smart Reply responses had to be tweaked because it kept suggesting users send "I love you" at the bottom of emails. *cringe*. Wouldn't that make for an awkward explanation to your boss if accidentally sent?
10. LeBron James has confirmed he will star in a Space Jam sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, production on the movie will begin next year with a release date yet to be announced. Ryan Coogler — the producer behind Black Panther — has also signed on to bring the Warner Bros’ Looney Tunes concept to life again. The announcement was made through James' media company SpringHill Entertainment:
