10 things you need to know this morning in Australia

Good morning.

1. The rebound in the Australian dollar is over -- for now. The Aussie fell heavily on Monday, weighed down by renewed concern over trade negotiations between China and the US. Along with the Kiwi dollar, it was among the worst performing major currencies during the session. At 6.35am AEST, it was down 0.49% to 0.7253.

2. Westpac is ditching risky property investors, giving them a month to find a new lender. It comes amid growing concerns about the impact of rising rates, falling values and oversupply. More here.

3. Prime Minister Scott Morrison wants Australians to celebrate a national indigenous day. He told The Daily Telegraph there should be a day to pay respect and remember the country’s “deep scars … in relation to the treatment and experience of indigenous Australians” but wants it as a separate day to Australia Day, which he insists should be kept on January 26.

4. Google quietly started logging people into Chrome without their consent. The changes were picked up by a security expert who says it happened after the tech giant made important changes to its Chrome web browser’s login requirements, making it easier for users to unwittingly turn over their browsing history to Google. The company has acknowledged the changes but stresses that users needed to consent to a sync before their browser data could be transferred.

5. There's a massive tech problem building up in Australia's banking industry, according to the head of Australia’s banking regulator. APRA chief Wayne Byres says domestic banks have under-invested in key infrastructure for years, and strongly recommended that domestic lenders boost investment to improve processes. Sam Jacobs has more.

6. Uh oh. The trade war between the US and China shows no sign of slowing down, and it might be about to get even worse. It comes as both countries imposed another round of tariffs on each other on Monday. All signs indicate their trade war is unlikely to end anytime soon, as US President Donald Trump is threatening more tariffs and China called off planned talks.

7. Michelle Guthrie was never the right fit for the ABC, despite her good intentions. Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney, Peter Manning, writes how the ABC managing director has been badly treated – not by being sacked, but by being hired in the first place. More here.

8. Deliveroo went from being the idea of a hungry banker to a $2 billion food delivery giant coveted by Uber. As rumours of an exit swirl, be that an acquisition or IPO, here's a look back at how the founders did it.

9. iPhone XS and XS Max buyers are complaining that their new devices have bad wifi and mobile signal. It follows a report from a wireless-technology blog which says the new iPhones demonstrated less signal strength than last year’s iPhones in lab testing.

10. Pictures from the rovers Japan landed on an asteroid 280 million km away are finally here, and they're very cool. Here’s the image that got mission spokesperson Takashi Kubota emotional:

“This is just a real charm of deep space exploration," he said.

Yes, the night is long and tedious, but perhaps perk up while your star player makes his acceptance speech?

Have a great day.
